2017 SMART529 Smart Start Award
Funding the Future for Children Adopted from Foster Care in West Virginia
West Virginia State Treasurer John Perdue and Mission West Virginia presented 12 children with SMART529 college savings awards on November 6th as part of the third annual SMART529 Smart Start Award program. Each child will receive $1,200 invested in a SMART529 account. The awards help boost college savings for children adopted from the foster care system in West Virginia.
The 12 children represent six families, which includes four sets of siblings. They range from 10 months to 12 years old. All recipients were adopted from the state’s foster care system and were selected by Mission West Virginia’s Frameworks program through a judged application process.
This year’s award ceremony brings the total to 31 children receiving a combined $37,200 over three years.
