Liz's Story

Liz, a teen living in kinship care, was introduced to our Bridge Program during her freshman year of high school, a period marked by personal challenges. Despite her difficulties, she agreed to regular meetings with an academic Mentor.

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, schools shifted to virtual learning. It was during this time that Liz discovered she was pregnant.

When the school reopened for in-person classes, the Mentor feared Liz might opt not to attend due to her circumstances. However, to their relief, Liz showed determination by walking down the school hall daily. This moment solidified the Mentor's belief that nothing would hinder Liz's resilience and determination to succeed.

Fast forward to her senior year, Liz was now a mother of twin 2-year-old boys, often putting their needs before her own. Recognizing that graduating and planning her future would greatly benefit her and her boys, Liz remained dedicated to her studies. She rarely missed a class and worked hard every day, even if she fell behind due to her children's needs.

Liz's exceptional responsibility and resilience were frequently praised by her teachers.  She was encouraged to apply for the National Honor Society by the school.  Despite initial doubts about her eligibility and the fear of disappointment, Liz eventually applied for the National Honor Society. A pivotal moment came when she received her acceptance letter, reaffirming her worth and potential.

Liz and her Mentor worked together to overcome significant barriers in her plans for her future. They navigated concerns about childcare, securing Liz's eligibility to maintain her current childcare while pursuing education. Transportation challenges were addressed when her Mentor provided a ride to a crucial appointment for an interview for a trade school. Financial constraints were tackled through applications for financial aid.  With her personal savings, Liz was able to purchase a used vehicle, a vital step towards a successful future for herself and her children.

Reflecting on her journey, Liz expressed deep gratitude for the Bridge Program and her mentor's unwavering, sometimes unconventional, support. Her Bridge Mentor encouraged her to aim high, identifying all the opportunities for her future and assisting her with applications for various post-secondary programs.

On this day, Liz is attending post-secondary training, with fees and tuition covered, a car and childcare, and a Mentor who is still in her life working to ensure that Liz can be everything she is capable of and more!

Liz credited the Bridge Program for positively impacting her future, emphasizing the crucial role it played in her success. “The Bridge program has impacted me and my future for the better." - Liz
